More Than a Parts Counter — A Team That Shows Up
When a drive faults out at 2 AM or a motor fails acceptance testing days before startup, you need a partner who can diagnose the problem, fix it correctly, and document the work — not just ship a replacement and walk away.
The 84 Group combines distributor-level access to OEM parts and factory support with hands-on field service capability. Our technicians work on the equipment you already have — troubleshooting on site, evaluating and repairing drives in our shop, restoring aging control panels to current standards, and running the tests that prove your motors and drives are ready for duty.
Talk to Our Service Team →Field Service Capabilities
Production doesn't stop at the shop door. When equipment goes down on your floor, in your mine, or at your treatment plant, you need technicians who understand industrial drives, motors, and controls — and who can get on site fast.
Our field service team provides on-site troubleshooting, startup and commissioning support, parameter backup and restoration, and hands-on assistance during planned outages and emergency situations. We work across mining, metals, water and wastewater, oil and gas, power utilities, and manufacturing — wherever variable frequency drives, motor control centers, and automation systems keep operations running.
- On-site drive and motor troubleshooting and fault diagnosis
- Startup, commissioning, and post-installation verification
- Emergency response for unplanned downtime situations
- Parameter backup, restore, and drive configuration support
- Thermal imaging and visual inspection during scheduled outages
- Coordination with your maintenance team and production schedules
Drive Evaluation & Repair
A fault code is a starting point, not an answer. Before you replace an entire drive, our evaluation process determines whether the unit can be repaired, what failed, and whether an upgrade makes more sense than a like-for-like swap.
We evaluate AC and DC variable frequency drives from ABB, Yaskawa, WEG, and other major manufacturers — performing root-cause diagnostics, component-level repair, firmware updates, and full functional testing before return to service. For legacy platforms including older ABB ACS drives and Sami Star systems, we can often extend equipment life significantly rather than forcing a premature capital replacement.
- Comprehensive drive diagnostics and fault analysis
- Board-level and component repair where economically viable
- Firmware updates and parameter optimization
- Legacy drive support — ABB ACS, Sami Star, and older platforms
- Load testing and verification before return to service
- Upgrade recommendations when repair isn't the best path forward
Control Panel Rehabilitation & Restoration
Replacing an entire motor control center or operator station isn't always the right answer. Many aging panels can be brought back to reliable, code-compliant operation through targeted rehabilitation — saving capital while extending equipment life.
Our panel rehabilitation services cover drive retrofits within existing enclosures, control wiring upgrades, safety circuit modernization, enclosure restoration, and arc-flash labeling updates. When rehabilitation isn't enough, our Panel Shop can design and build a drop-in replacement — but we always evaluate whether restoration is the smarter path first.
- Drive retrofits and upgrades within existing panel enclosures
- Control wiring remediation and terminal block restoration
- Safety circuit modernization and STO/SS1 integration
- Enclosure cleaning, gasket replacement, and climate control repair
- Arc-flash labeling and documentation updates
- Drop-in replacement panels from our Panel Shop when needed
Low & Medium Voltage Motor and Drive Testing
Acceptance testing, preventive maintenance, and failure analysis all depend on the same thing: accurate, documented test results from technicians who know what the numbers mean — not just how to read them off a meter.
We provide comprehensive motor and drive testing for both low voltage and medium voltage applications. Whether you need baseline data for a new installation, annual PM records for your reliability program, or forensic analysis after a failure, our testing protocols deliver the documentation your engineering and maintenance teams need to make confident decisions.
- Insulation resistance (megger) and polarization index testing
- Hi-pot (dielectric withstand) testing for LV and MV equipment
- Surge comparison testing for motor winding integrity
- Vibration analysis and alignment verification
- VFD output verification — voltage, current, and harmonic analysis
- Documented test reports for acceptance, PM, and failure records
Comprehensive Motor & Drive Test Programs
From routine preventive maintenance to acceptance testing on new installations, we run the tests that matter — and deliver clear reports your team can act on.
Insulation Resistance (Megger)
Measures winding insulation integrity for LV and MV motors. Baseline and trending data supports predictive maintenance programs and identifies degradation before failure.
Hi-Pot (Dielectric Withstand)
Verifies insulation can withstand rated voltage plus safety margin. Required for acceptance testing on new and rewound motors, and for MV equipment commissioning.
Surge Comparison Testing
Detects turn-to-turn and phase-to-phase winding weaknesses that megger tests miss. Critical for assessing motor condition after faults or before recommissioning.
Vibration Analysis
Identifies bearing wear, misalignment, imbalance, and mechanical looseness. Supports both motor standalone analysis and coupled system evaluation.
Alignment Verification
Laser alignment checks between motor and driven equipment to prevent premature bearing and coupling failure from mechanical stress.
Thermal Imaging
Non-invasive hotspot detection on terminations, bus work, drives, and motors during loaded operation — catches problems invisible to visual inspection.
VFD Output Verification
Measures drive output voltage, current, frequency, and harmonic content under load. Confirms proper drive operation and identifies output-side issues.
Load & Performance Testing
Functional testing under operating conditions to verify torque response, speed regulation, and thermal performance before return to production duty.
Documented Test Reports
Every test program includes clear, actionable reports with pass/fail criteria, measured values, and recommendations — ready for your CMMS and compliance files.
From Problem to Verified Solution
Whether we're responding to an emergency or executing a planned maintenance program, every service engagement follows a structured process.
Assess
We gather symptoms, review fault history, and inspect the equipment on site or in our shop to understand the full scope before recommending a path forward.
Diagnose
Root-cause analysis using diagnostic tools, test equipment, and platform-specific expertise — not guesswork based on fault codes alone.
Repair or Restore
Execute the agreed repair, rehabilitation, or replacement using genuine OEM parts and proven procedures — with clear communication throughout.
Verify & Document
Functional testing, load verification, and complete documentation so your team has confidence the equipment is ready and a record for future reference.
